My first bike

Bob Batz

Bob Batz

Times change.

So do bicycles.

I recently bought bicycles for my two grandchildren so they would have something to ride when they were at our house. Nick is nine. Morgan is five.

Not as fancy as this.

Not as fancy as this.

Nick’s bike is black and silver with a fancy seat and hand brakes. The bike is called a “Black Shadow,” or something really dramatic like that.

Morgan’s bike – a “Precious Princess” – is purple and pink, has bright-colored plastic ribbons dangling from the handlebars and probably glows in the dark.   Read the rest of this entry »

MSNBC et al: Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse

Ashley Stinnett

Ashley Stinnett

When it comes to finger-pointing and name-calling, no media outlet does it better than MSNBC. When it comes to baseless new stories with an all-but-obvious radical liberal twist, no one does it better than the Democrat News Channel known as MSNBC.

What could have been.

What could have been.

It’s pretty obvious the real newsworthy story of this past week was the rising death toll of American troops in Afghanistan. This should have alarmed anyone following the war.

But this past week, while channel surfing, I couldn’t help but stop on MSNBC after seeing a news brief about President Obama and golf.

Democrats call Sarah Palin a liar

Dan Sherrier

Dan Sherrier

Democrats are taking aim at Sarah Palin’s Facebook posts. Their strategy to shoot her down? Call her a liar.

In their open letter to Palin, the Democrats begin, “You’ve spent a great deal of time spreading lies about health reform, and we’ve had enough. We’re calling you out. And since you’ve spread so much misinformation on Facebook, we’ve decided to come here to do it.”

Oh, no! Her mouth is moving!

Oh, no! Her mouth is moving!

The Democrats’ Facebook note has so far generated over 100 comments, mostly from people seizing the opportunity to vent their rage against Palin. Ironically, some people took the time to comment simply to say she wasn’t even worth acknowledging.

On Democrats.org, they state, “A lot of folks use Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends. For Sarah Palin, it’s a great way to spread lies about health insurance reform.”

Dan Snyder, the Redskins and our other symbols of failure

Bob Franken

Bob Franken

Chances are you’ve been following the Washington Redskins epic lately. You don’t have to be a football fan to be fascinated by the story of a team owner who has managed in 10 short years to squander generations of goodwill from an area that came together on little besides the adoration of the Redskins.

A symbol for much more than a failing football team.

A symbol for much more than a failing football team.

That has been frittered away thanks to one lousy decade of astoundingly inept management under owner Dan Snyder.

What’s so amazing is the intensity of anger directed at Snyder. When those watching from their grossly overpriced seats aren’t booing the team, which is remarkable in itself, they are turning to the owner’s box and chanting “Sell the Team. Sell the Team!!”, or “Fire Snyder!!” (Full disclosure: I am one of those who has paid to be in the stands). Read the rest of this entry »

A new budget in the cards?

Hat tip: Jackie Warner

This was taken in early September in the Connecticut state legislature, during House deliberations on the Connecticut state budget. The solitaire players are Democrats Barbara Lambert and Jack Hennessey. The guy next to them is checking baseball scores. The guy in the row in front of them is on Facebook.

We are not inclined to judge. If we had to sit through budget deliberations, we would probably check baseball scores too.

House Democrats’ health bill: Huge costs and taxes, more economic irrationality and delusion (and all John Boehner can do is count the pages)

Dan Calabrese

Dan Calabrese

Who decided to make John Boehner the Republicans’ leader in the House? It is brutal to watch this man drone on about “1,900 pages of bureaucracy” and give out a web URL where everyone can read about the Republicans’ better solutions to health care.

Its whats on those pages that matters, John

It's what's on those pages that matters, John

Boehner may not be the best Republicans can do, but apparently he’s the best they’ve decided to do. That’s a shame because there are far more compelling arguments to be made against the House Democrats’ monstrosity of a health care bill. And here they are:

House Dems health bill introduces ‘temporary government program’

Dan Calabrese

Dan Calabrese

Let’s see. When was the last time a “temporary government program” actually expired?

There wasn’t much news in the actual substance of the House Democrats’ health care bill as unveiled today. The whole announcement was mainly  just Nancy Pelosi and crew patting themselves on the back and trying to create the impression that the bill’s enactment is a fait accompli.

They live forever.

It lives forever.

But they did give us something new, and anyone who’s concerned about what this health care gambit could become should be concerned about it. The bill doesn’t take full effect until 2013, at which point insurers would be barred from denying coverage to anyone because of pre-existing conditions.

A Fox in the White House

Bob Franken

Bob Franken

What possibly could the Fox News executive and President Obama’s press secretary have to talk about? Surely they weren’t negotiating some sort of truce to end the silly War of Petulance the president’s peeps have declared on Fox. Say it ain’t so.

No more feud?

No more feud?

Were they describing some sort of quid pro quo? Did the administration offer to recognize that news media have the right to be critical of a president no matter how little he is used to it? Did the Fox guy offer to lighten up, to be a little less shrill about FNC’s biases? Does this mean there will be no more ” Tea Parties”? Let’s hope not.
