Perhaps no one in the United States knows more about Iran than Michael Ledeen. So while there are frequently rumors about the death of Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei – and when I first heard it I was reluctant to post anything for that very reason – it got my attention when I saw that Ledeen was on it.
They did say 72 virgins, right?
Here’s what he has from a source he identifies as authoritative:
Yesterday afternoon at 2.15PM local time, Khamenei collapsed and
was taken to his special clinic. Nobody – except his son and the
doctors – has since been allowed to get near him.
His official, but secret, status is: “in the hands of the gods”.
Reportedly this collapse is natural. Many would like him to move to his
afterlife but reportedly the collapse was not ‘externally induced’
[no poisioning]. The few insiders who know about the collapse see
this development “as a gift from the gods”.
His condition had already seriously deteriorated over the last
months, aggravated by his nervous condition due to [1] his
inability to solve the problems created by his manipulation of the
election results and the refusal of [a large part of] the
population to accept this, plus [2] his loss of religious authority
by means of the repeated condemnations of events by senior clerics
The expectation is that, if Khamenei dies, a bloodbath will ensue as the remaining mullahs form camps and battle for power. There is always the possibility of course – best of all worlds, granted – that regime in place since the 1979 Islamic Revolution would fall entirely.
That would be awesome. But as of now this is still just a rumor. Stay tuned.
Update: For what it’s worth, Iran’s embassy in Armenia has issued a denial to an Armenian media source called Panorama. The story says:
Iran’s Embassy to Armenia told Panorama.am the spread rumor over Ayatollah Khamenei death is slander and has nothing to do with the reality: Ayatollah is not dead.
Anyway, News.ru Israel says the situation is extremely tense in the Iranian capital of Tehran, with lots of militaries and security workers in the streets. Providing Khamenei is really dead, Iran’s religious governing body must elect a new leader. According to the source, Ayatollah death will raise disaccord and a threat to the regime.
Does that clear anything up? Didn’t think so.

Any sort of instability in the regime is a good step toward democracy . Let’s hope this is legit.
The best thing that could happen to Iran would be for the entire regime to collapse. Freedom loving people of Iran are more than capable to take matters in their own hand.

Are you joking? And who replaces the regime? And what if nothing replaces it? i.e. a civil war of some sort ensues? If you thought the region is unstable right now, just wait for something like this to blow up. Like it or not, Iran has been one of the most stable countries in the Middle East. Do away with its regime and have no replacement, and you’ll see drug trafficking increase, and terrorists crossing between Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq through Iran.
And not to mention the countless Iranians that might die in the process. But of course, who cares about them, right? As long as they’re not a menace towards the West and are not developing a nuclear bomb, who cares how many more innocent blood is shed there.
I’m sick of people thinking that the collapse of this regime — and don’t get me wrong, this regime is awful — is the solution and don’t for a second give the negative consequences a thought.

If we are going to quote “authoritative” sources we may want to at least translate correctly: In Islam there is only ONE God. So I’d like to know who the rest of these ‘gods’ are. I’m sure one of them is willing to accept a bribe to finish the job.
There are strong indications that Khamenei went into a coma and he was taken to a very private hospital. When Khameini died, IRI kept it secret for 3 days, till they sort ed it the power structure, this time it might be different, Khamenei really has screwed things up!

Seriously?? You may want to become a little more informed before writing this stuff. He is/was a puppet of the Revolutionary Guard and there is no real successor to take his place. If he dies, the most likely scenario is that the Revolutionary Guard will consolidate its power and the current behind the scene military government will come to the fore-front.
By the way, if you think Michael Ledeen has any credibility you’ve been sleeping the last 5 years.
