The Qadaffi Prize for Human Rights: This could be the start of something

Jamie Weinstein

I recently became aware of an international human rights award endowed by and named after Libyan dictator Muammar Qadaffi. It is, of course, ridiculous for a gross human rights violator to be the namesake of an international prize for human rights.

No less absurd have been the recipients of the Qadaffi Prize. Over its 20-year history, the Qadaffi Prize has been bestowed on such human rights luminaries as Louis Farrakhan and Fidel Castro.

What a guy.

In some years, the Prize was awarded to entities like the Libraries of Timbuktu and the Third World Center. Bizarrely, the esteemed Qadaffi Prize has also been awarded, in varying years, to the Children of Palestine, indigenous peoples of the Americas, the children of Iraq, and the children of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In any respect, the Al-Qadaffi International Prize for Human Rights got me thinking. In the spirit of the prize, what other awards should be created? What follows is a listing of the awards the world is desperately waiting for, and possible nominees for each.
