If Obama’s proud of the troops, why doesn’t he act like it?

Dacia Nichol Taylor

On matters of national security, the president will often cite the bravery and sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform.

Why doesn’t he seem to like talking about them?

Since he doesn’t support the Second Amendment, surely no one was holding a gun to his head, forcing him to address our mission and our soldiers. Yet he did so, appearing stone-faced and bored.

Why doesn’t he appear as he says he is, proud of them?

Above it all.

The president says he supports our troops and had some sparkling things to say about them in his Oval Office address on Tuesday night.

Why wasn’t he with them?

Maybe that was the point. By keeping his distance, he displayed what we already knew about him.

The president does not like his predecessor, does not like being in Iraq, nominated a Supreme Court Justice who does not like the military, and now, at the end of our successful mission in Iraq – no, our victory in Iraq – he has chosen to send his vice president to do his bidding and attend the ceremonial end and transition of the mission.

Sorry guys, I’ve got more important things to do.

Joe has a son in the military! Joe is a national security guy! But Obama is the president. It’s his war now. He’s commander in chief. That’s commander in chief of the United States military. With such an important title, what was his primary focus in a speech on national security? 1) Taking credit for ending the mission, a “campaign promise”; 2) Plugging the civilians that will now take over; 3) Giving many pats on the back to the Iraqis for taking responsibility for their own country; and 4) The importance of “turning the page” on this and moving on with his economic agenda…and Afghanistan, the war in which he is going to continue using the same tactics that won Iraq, without giving any credit to the tactics or those who implemented them to win Iraq.

What didn’t he say?

He didn’t say he was personally proud of his troops. He said “as Commander in Chief”, a role he fills by default as the president of the United States. He didn’t say he, as an important leader, or as a humbled individual, was in awe over their sacrifice. He said “like all Americans”, meaning that instead of an individual who is moved by his defenders of freedom, he feels…something…like everyone else…for better or worse.

He even took away from the military’s important role in both Afghanistan and Iraq by giving a spotlight mention of diplomacy, economy, and our example in the world (which he also scorns because we spend too much money). He ended every “up” with a “down”, careful to keep any pride in our actions in check with his disapproval of the mission. Ironically, he was sure to mention how much 10 years fighting two wars cost as a burden on our economy. No mention of how many jobs, newer technology, more freedom, etc. came about from that expenditure. And definitely no mention of how he spent that same amount in one year, on one piece of legislation, that has failed and weakened our security by weakening our position in the world.

Sure, addressing the nation is pretty standard. He needed to do it. But if he was truly interested in taking over as commander in chief, earning the respect of the military, and acting like a president who actually cares – he would have been there for the ceremony too. Not just in small groups of pre-selected members to talk to.

What was the overall message of the speech? The same one he always has: Don’t be too proud of what you’ve done, America. I’m not finished with it yet.

The NSN really needs to start enforcing it’s “no drug use while writing columns” rule.ly Darcy was stoned out of her mind when she wrote this piece. Besides my first reaction which is, “SO WHAT???”, Darcy’s short term memory must be shot since she forgot that the President spent part of the day of the speech personally thanking troops at Fort Bliss Texas and that following that, he personally awarded more than a dozen Purple Heart medals to soldiers at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Obviously, she cares more about trashing the President that presenting a fact-based opinion piece that in addition to having a point, actually tells the truth.

Dacia, and not ‘Darcy’ as the previous liberal dope wrote, you wrote a very good article that rightly shows the kind of president we have. He didn’t go to Iraq because (1) he is scared of being in a war zone, (2) he is NOT proud of what the military did over there, (3) he didn’t want to say anything nice about the U.S. in front of his Muslim ‘brothers, and (4) why would he go over there? I mean, exactly how much military or foreign experience does he have? He will easily go down in history as the biggest farce of a president this country has ever had. One thing you can be sure of and that is that I never voted for him!

I am not an Obama supporter. However, I agree with what Craig said. Honestly, so what? President Obama was against this war from the very beginning and made his thoughts about this war very clear years ago. Do you think he would personally be for the war just because he became President? He inherited this unnecessary war and all the problems associated with it.

Nothing has changed in Iraq. There are still 50,000 troops over there being shot at and receiving combat pay. Combat missions are not over with. Now *that* is another Obama lie.

  • @Rich: Thank you. :)

    @Craig:

Making apparances suggested by some pollsters doesn’t jive for a committed war time president. If I never show up for school plays, help with homework, or pay attention to my kid’s nutrition, but I take my kid to school every day, am I a good parent by default because I showed up?

Actions speak louder than words – yours speak volumes about yourself. The minute you throw and insult is the minute you admit defeat if you actually are trying to make a valid point or debate.

It’s been apparent right from the start that Obama has nothing but disgust for the troops, as does Babs Boxer, who arrogantly complained to some general that she wanted to be addressed by him as “Senator” rather than “Ma’am” because she had worked so hard to gain the title. As if she thinks the general or anyone in the military hasn’t worked hard, and heroically by the way, and as if playing politics was real difficult in comparison. Has she seen action? Has Obama? There are photos of Obama with General McChrystal where Obama’s body language appears to be conveying that he is very uncomfortable even talking to this genuine warrior. I think it’s because he feels cowed by someone who knows how to fight. (Okay, personal opinion). Hey Craig — if he is so much behind our military, how come he complained that wounded military soldiers weren’t paying their own medical bills after receiving wounds in combat, and that he was surprised that they actually expected their government to do it instead? Sorry, but the guy doesn’t have a clue. He has lived in another world forever, apparently. He pronounced “Corps” as in “Marine Corps” as if were “corpse.” I cannot figure why people think he’s so smart. How could someone live in this country for very long and actually not know how to pronounce that? I think it will some day come out that he really isn’t all that bright. Just because he has a law degree doesn’t mean that he’s street smart, or that he has common sense. He has disgust for our military heroes. He’s nothing but a disgrace.

  • Pat Tillman's Legacy:

Why didn’t GWB, Cheney, Rummey, and the rest of the war-hawk crowd “love” Pat Tillman enough to HONOR his service to our country, and NOT LIE to his parents (and the rest of the country) re. the circumstances of his death?

Don’t trouble your bleach-blonde-induced brain to spend more than a micro-second ‘thinking’ that one thru, “blondie”…

Your Republican elite aren’t any more “patriotic” than the Democrats are. You’re just ignorant enought to actually think that they are.
