Dream Act: Conservatives need to untwist themselves on immigration
Every political movement picks up a little lint along the way, and the conservative movement has a pesky problem on the issue of immigration. It’s a strange stance for a movement that rejects big government, with all its rules, forms, procedures and restrictions.
Then again, maybe it’s just that Hispanics and Latinos are historically more likely to vote Democratic.

Welcome to America!
Whatever the reason, the right’s knee-jerk opposition to sensible immigration reform finds the troops up in arms about the Dream Act – a measure that would provide a path to citizenship for illegals who were brought here as kids by their parents.
The usual conservative objection to any path to citizenship for illegals is that it rewards lawbreaking. You can hardly apply that argument to people who came here as kids because their parents dragged them across the border.
And we’re not talking about blanket amnesty for everyone of a certain age. Citizenship via Dream Act provisions only applies to people who are currently under 35, who have lived here since before the age of 16, and who agree to either attend two years of college or serve in the military two years.
In other words, demonstrate that you’re an upstanding member of society and that you’re serious about being a good citizen.
What possible objection could conservatives have to this? These people aren’t about to be rounded up and deported, regardless of whether the Dream Act passes or not. Do you want them hanging out in the streets and dealing drugs? Or do you want them in college or in uniform?
The Center for Immigration Studies believes that the Dream Act will cost over $6 billion when you include possible public subsidies for their tuition – assuming a large percentage of them are poor. So what would it cost society – again, assuming they’re poor – to have them hanging around draining the resources of society without producing anything? If they go to college or join the military, they’re a lot less likely to present that problem.
Conservative orthodoxy on immigration is twisted like a pretzel. You’d think conservatives would celebrate people’s desire to become Americans. They claim they just want immigrants to follow the rules.
Really? Since when do conservatives reflect dreamily on people filling out forms and paying fees to the federal government? Sneaking across the border in the dead of night is as anti-establishment as Ronald Reagan himself.
All of the ancillary problems that go along with illegal immigration can be handled via sensible policies we should have on the books anyway. Don’t like illegals getting welfare and driver’s licenses? I agree. Require legal status, if not outright citizenship, for any sort of welfare. (Or better yet, get rid of welfare.) Don’t like illegals committing crimes? Solve the previous problem and chances are the would-be criminals don’t even want to come.
But what possible problem could you have with people who came here without having a choice in the matter, and have been here for years, since they were very young, getting a chance to earn citizenship through a serious commitment to doing the right things?
It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that conservative apoplexy about illegal immigration is about one thing – politics. They see illegals as prospective Democratic voters, and the last thing they want is a bunch of people suddenly swelling the voter rolls and pulling the lever for Democrats in mass numbers.
Well. When George W. Bush ran for re-election in 2004, he got over 40 percent of the Hispanic vote – the best ever for a Republican candidate. That was due in large part to the fact that Bush was not reflexively opposed to sensible immigration reform, and didn’t insist on labeling as “amnesty” that which simply solves an otherwise intractable national problem.
The Dream Act only gives good people a chance to become good Americans. If conservatives are against that, it can only be because they’ve allowed their so-called principles to twist them into intellectual pretzels.

“But what possible problem could you have with people who came here without having a choice in the matter,” None. Except that this legislation does absolutely nothing to deter future illegal immigration.
“All of the ancillary problems that go along with illegal immigration can be handled via sensible policies we should have on the books anyway. Don’t like illegals getting welfare and driver’s licenses? I agree.” So do the American people, the problem is our politicians don’t agree and are afraid to pass legislation that restricts these benefits for illegals.
But don’t go expecting Americans (not just conservatives) to allow congress to pass legislation allowing a reprieve (let’s not call it amnesty) for those here illegally, until there is some tightening of the rules to deter their coming in the first place.
@Dan: Sounds good…BUT!! the Dream Act actually WILL reward people for illegal behavior. How so? Well, it will reward ALL THOSE MILLIONS of PARENTS who brought their children here illegally. Bestowing a path to US citizenship upon a child is probably the BEST reward any poor parent from another country could ever hope for.
In addition, keep in mind that once these Dream Act “children” have their applications pending, they are immediately granted legal temporary residence. That means that all their MILLIONS of parents, grandparents, and siblings currently living here illegally will ALSO be safe from deportation because we already know that ICE will not try to deport anyone if it causes hardships or breaks up families.
Think about it: will ICE make any attempt to deport undocumented family members of a minor child with a Dream Act application in the works? Of course not!
This means that not only are we granting a stay of removal to 6 million potential “Dreamers” but we are also granting a “proxy” stay of removal to probably 6 million more of their family members who are also in this country illegally.
So, in reality, this is simply a plan to provide a backdoor stay of removal/legal residency to virtually ALL of the 12 to 30 million people who are currently here illegally.
It’s nothing but BS politics on the Republicans side for not passing the Dream ACT. Polls show over and over again that majority of Americans SUPPORT THE DREAM ACT. Those who oppose tend to be older, less educated Republicans. Younger Americans, those under 40 with some college experience or degrees overwhelmingly support the Dream Act.
It’s the right thing to do for these kids and also for the country.
Pass the Dream Act Now.
Yeah, right! It’s all those mean conservatives wanting the rule of law to apply, the gays are oh so happy to see OUR elected representatives legislating for non-citizens while we’re still fighting tooth & nail for equal rights. SCHEME ACT supporters are seriously demented if they think generations of LGBT CITIZENS are supportive of this insult to America. They are foreign nationals making demands on OUR representatives, THAT MAKES THEM TERRORISTS! Period!
SCHEME ACT kids, here’s some sympathy *awwwwww*, but you are not coming here in violation of our laws and then lobbying our lawmakers for exemptions to our laws. NO WAY! If any of the SCHEME ACT kids had ANY grasp of American principles they’d know better than to make these types of demands.
Self Entitled Domestic Terrorists! Every. Single. One.
@screaming queen: “Scheme Act”…yes, that’s a vastly more accurate title for this bill.
We still need to push forward in assisting the state and local governments with the detention and deportation of the ILLEGALS.
Please read the information at the link, sign it, and then pass it on to everyone you know.
We are not anti-freedom. We are, however, anti-give them a free pass to everything after they broke the laws of this country just coming here.
If you are pulled over and are not able to hand the officer a driver’s license or insurance, you can expect to have your vehicle towed and be taken to jail. It’s different for the ILLEGALS. They may get their vehicle towed, but it’s highly unlikely they will be taken to jail because the officer has to fear being accused of racial profiling.
We, as Americans, are expected to abide by the laws of this country. We expect the same from every single person that is within our borders. When the ILLEGALS BREAK OUR LAWS just getting here, we have a major problem with it.
The best thing that the kids of the ILLEGALS can witness as far as learning responsibility, is seeing their entire family sent back to the country they came from, seeing their parents being held accountable for their ILLEGAL behavior, and then they can blame their parents for screwing up their lives, because it was never our fault to begin with.

I knew if I waited long enough, you’d write something I could agree with. Give ‘em hell Dan.
Will the tens of millions of PARENTS of these Dream Act kids still be subject to deportation?
Or will they also be issued a “stay of removal” so they can continue to live illegally in the USA to care for their 12 to 18-year-old, school-age children?
Hm, So i’m ok with this but still not absolutely positive, therefore i am gonna research a tad bit more.
